MUMBAI: Stuttgart based premium car maker, Mercedes Benz India has launched its much awaited compact luxury hatchback A Class at Rs 21.93 lakh to Rs 22.73 lakh ex showroom Mumbai, creating a new entry level price points for the company in India.
Interestingly, the diesel variant A 180 CDI powered by a 2.2 litre diesel engine is priced lower at Rs 21.93 lakh and is the most fuel efficient luxury car in India delivering fuel efficiency of 20.6 kilometers per litre, Mercedes Benz India claims. The 1.6 litre petrol version - A 180 Sport is priced at Rs 22.73 lakh, which delivers a fuel efficiency of little over 15 kilometers per litre. The A Class is powered by an efficient turbo-charged engine with direct injection and comes with standard ECO start/stop function
Mercedes Benz India sees a potential of selling atleast 100-150 units of A Class in a month and it sees the A Class complementing the B Class sports tourer, which sells about 50 cars a month with just the petrol variant. The diesel B Class will be launched in the coming weeks, which too will add another 60-70 units of the car.
Kern says this is just the beginning, going ahead Mercedes Benz India will be bringing slew of new generation compact cars namely, the B Class diesel variant, CLA and GLA compact SUV. And this will be addition to boosting its existing portfolio. "We will also be bringing our flagship S Class early next year and we are waiting for the right hand drive versin of medium size SUV GLK for India," said Kern.
According the CEO of Mercedes Benz India, 31,000 units the luxury car market is still at a very nascent stage in India making up for just 1.2% of the overall passenger vehicle market, but the segment he feels has reached an inflection point and is set to take off, with product portfolio getting a major boost. "We expect the luxury car market to touch 2,80,000 units by 2020 and will make up for 4% of the overall car market. Through our new generation cars we aim to build our market share further," Kern told ET.
While initially these next generation compact cars (A Class, B Class, CLA, GLA) will be small in numbers, but going ahead Kern expects them to be major volume drivers making up for 40% of cars sold in India by 2020.
